Jeg har vist tidligere skrevet at det var en meget lille skole, men i går fortalte Rasmus at der i alt - i 6. til 12. klasse - er 36 elever på skolen. Det er ikke mange elever i hver klasse. Som I vil kunne se, var der en lærer der udeblev fra klassen, men da eleverne ikke straks gik på kontoret for at indberette at de ikke havde nogen lærer, er det eleverne der bliver straffet. Jeg er ikke helt sikker på at jeg forstår pædagogikken i det, og jeg håber at kunne få forklaret hvordan læreren - eller den der har været årsag til misforståelsen - er blevet "taget i skole" efter episoden.
Dear Parents,
I am writing to notify you of an incident that occurred on the morning of Monday, September 17th. Due to a teacher's absence and miscommunication, the 8th grade history class was left unattended. Although it is never acceptable to leave students alone, there were teachers present in their classes on both sides of the eighth grade classroom.
During the first week of school I went into every class and spoke with students regarding school rule. One of those rules: if a teacher is absent from a classroom, it is the responsibility of the student(s) to notify the office immediately that the class is unattended.
The students involved have been given appropriate consequences and are presently working on regaining their trustworthiness to the faculty, administration, and their parents.
We regret that this incident occurred and want to assure you that steps have been taken in order to avoid this from happening again.
Rumors tend to greatly exaggerate an event. Please call if you have any questions at all.
Da Rasmus kom hjem fra skole, spurgte jeg om han havde hørt om episoden. Det havde han naturligvis, det taler børnene jo om. Vi talte ved middagsbordet om, at det var lidt underligt at straffe børnene, men en regel er jo en regel, men den regel om, at eleverne skal underrette kontoret, hvis der ikke dukker en lærer op til timen, den havde han alligevel ikke hørt om. Den regel han havde hæftet sig mest ved var, at man ikke må forlade klasselokalet midt i timen, med mindre læreren giver en et "hall pass". Og når der nu ikke er nogen lærer, hvem skal så give én lov til at gå ud på gangen? Kan det tænkes at de stakkels elever i klassen blev enige om, at straffen for at gå ud på gangen midt i en time var værre end straffen for ikke at have informeret om en manglende lærer?
